(More customer reviews)I bought a Sezmi for $[...] from Best Buy to replace my Tivo HD, which cost $12.95 a month for the service.I live in the Twin Cities, MN, so only the $4.99 over the air service is available at present.I thought I'd be able to save $8 a month, potentially be able to add cable channels later on, and have a 1TB DVR to boot, greatly increasing the recording capacity I had with my Tivo HD.
First issue:
It requires an ethernet cable to be plugged in, to get the TV guide, and for web video, youtube, and on demand downloads.Since one wasn't available by my entertainment center, first I ran a 25 foot cord there.Next, I boiught and installed Home Plugs - they worked for about a minute, then Sezmi dropped connection with them, replugged in the Home Plugs, repeated about a dozen times, connection drops within about a minute every time.Wasted 40 bucks on those.Next I bought a Zyxel wireless access point.This was VERY hard to get set up to talk to my wireless network, but thanks to a good helpful review on the Amazon site, got enough pointers to get it done.Zyxel wireless access point now works flawlessly.
Deal Breaker issue:
Although the over the air HD picture is beautiful and clear both live and from playback mode, it freezes and stutters from time to time, sometimes enough to be very annoying.I have tried everything: changing cable connections, upgrading my attic antenna to a DB4.This didn't work, and even with my prior DB2, my other flat screen TVs hooked up to the antenna outlets in other rooms worked flawlessly.They still work flawlessly, but Sezmi stutters and freezes, particularly in live TV mode.It is mostly perfect if I am playing back a recorded show, but the freezes, pauses and stutters watching live TV are driving me crazy.This is a very new product, and I have seen only one other review referencing the same issue, so I don't know.
I need an ATSC tuner with HDMI output and optical audio output.I was willing to pay $5 a month to Sezmi for its box to fill this need, with the bonus of a 1TB DVR.The DVR works good, but the live TV freezes, sputters, jitters, pauses are too much to deal with.
